Emperors have cherished it. Egyptians had their burial clothes from it. Royals made their prized covers and napkins from it. It was indestructible material and valued as such. Throughout history asbestos has been used and in some empires valued more than gold itself. For all its glory it has one huge downfall. It was killing people and they did not even know it. Asbestos is a common name describing a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals composed of hydrous-magnesium-silicate groups. Its unique chemical composition makes it an excellent insulator, flame retardant, high tensile strength and resistance to chemicals. Put it simply it was the material of choice with all around purpose. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. Upon crystallization the molecules bind by linear
polymerization
producing oriented crystalline structure. This three dimensional
crystalline structure is very similar to other crystals and gemstones.
What makes asbestos different is that two of the planes of this molecular
arrangement are much weaker than the third one. Once sufficient force is
applied the crystalline structure breaks along its plane with linear
fragmentation, producing fibrous material. This breakdown will continue to
the molecular level. The average size of respirable asbestos is 3-20 μm
and can be as thin as 0.01 µm.. To make things worse this small size
being airborne is easily dispersed making it that more difficult to
contain. With such as small size we can not see it or taste it yet we are
breathing it and accumulating it in our lungs. Once in
our system our body can not get rid of it. Our defense systems will fight
it and try to get rid of it causing several types of diseases. Two
predominant types are Asbestosis
and Mesothelioma. Asbestosis: Prolonged
exposure to asbestos causes significant accumulation of fibers in our
lungs. Our immune system tries to get rid of it by releasing various acids
to dissolve it. Severe scaring of lungs occurs and Asbestosis
is the end result. During our normal breathing , air travels through our nose or mouth, down our throat, through larynx to trachea. Trachea splits into two branches called bronchi, carrying air to the left and right lung. The bronchi further branches into smaller airways called bronchioles that further branch to alveoli. Alveoli are small, thin walled air sacs whose main function is to exchange gases vital for our existence. Oxygen, from the air enters our bloodstream while carbon dioxide and water leave.
Normally, microorganisms, dust and other foreign particles in the air are expelled when we cough and the ones that remain are destroyed by macrophages which are alveoli’s immune cells. Asbestos fibers are difficult to destroy causing macrophage to release the acids in alveoli. This causes the alveoli to become inflamed and eventually scar, a process referred to as fibrosis. The result is that your lung capacity lowers, oxygen exchange is lessened, causing the shortness of breath. As the scarring increase the breathing becomes more difficult resulting in full blown Asbestosis. Mesothelioma: The mesothelium is the membrane that lines three of the body's cavities: the pleura or thoracic cavity; the peritoneum or abdominal cavity; and the pericardium or heart sac. The mesothelium comes from the mesoderm cell layer that lines the body cavity in the embryonic state. It becomes the layer of cells that covers and protects our internal organs. The mesothelium has two layers of cells. The first layer immediately surrounds the organ and the second layer is the sac that surrounds the cavity. It produces a lubricating fluid that is released between the two layers, allowing moving organs, such as the beating heart, the expanding lungs and the active intestine, to glide easily within the body cavity. Mesothelioma is type of cancer involving misothelial tissues. As scarring of fibrosis increases the body’s defense mechanism is continuously trying to rid the toxin. The damage they cause is through inflammation as well as stimulating the growth of these cells. Finally, they may damage the tissue’s DNA and cause changes that result in uncontrolled growth.
